DEDICATION TO TEXTURE AND TASTE has made Whittaker’s famous for quality since 1896. Committed to overseeing every part of the chocolate-making process, from beans to bar, their quest for perfection hasn’t changed since J.H. Whittaker made his first bar of chocolate over 120 years ago.

“Our commitment to ‘best’ goes beyond using the finest ingredients, methods and machinery,” says Holly Whittaker, great-granddaughter of the founder. “We strive to do what we do in a good, honest way. We make sure we support our wonderful staff. We seek out ingredients that are ethically, fairly and sustainably produced. And we insist on following best practice in manufacturing.”

“A good, honest approach also means helping our local community, developing sustainable packaging, and helping our Pacific neighbours who supply us.”

This year the family-owned-and-run business is making more inroads into its sustainability programme. This includes initiatives to reduce waste, shifting to 100% ethically sourced cocoa, and reviewing innovative options to enable a transformation to fully sustainable packaging.

This year will also see Whittaker’s expand its Porirua site. A new architecturally designed, purpose-built facility behind existing buildings will provide a separate area for roasting, sorting and quality assurance of ingredients, allowing the company to continue to control its commitment to quality all the way from roasting cocoa beans to the final delicious creations.
