BORN FROM A BOLD IDEA to bring advanced medical care to those who needed it most, New Zealand’s rescue helicopter service took flight on Auckland’s rugged west coast in the summer of 1970. What began as a pioneering operation has grown into a vital part of the country’s emergency response network and is widely regarded as the world’s first civilian aeromedical service of its kind.
Today, Westpac Rescue forms part of a nationwide network of 15 rescue helicopter services, working closely with other emergency services to respond to medical emergencies, serious accidents, and search and rescue missions across both urban and remote locations.
The helicopters are crewed by highly trained pilots, air crew officers, and critical care medical professionals, capable of conducting night operations, winch rescues, and time-critical inter-hospital transfers. Operating 24/7, 365 days a year, the service often provides the fastest access to lifesaving care.
While government funding and corporate sponsorship are essential, community support remains crucial. Kiwis can support their local rescue helicopter through the Westpac Chopper Appeal.
